English Yew (Taxus baccata) Readybag Hedging
English Yew (Taxus baccata) readybag hedging is one of if not the classic garden hedge. It makes a brilliant back drop for ornamental planting and has been used for many years in the gardens of some of the grandest stately homes and palaces. It forms a incredibly dense hedge and with regular trimming this can easily be maintained. Being a conifer means that it can be trimmed up to form really sharp edges and amazing geometric shapes.
English Yew (Taxus baccata hedge) readybag hedging is one of only 3 conifers that are native to the United Kingdom. It will grow in nearly every part of the United Kingdom and in well drained soils will grow very happily in nearly pure chalk though to very acidic peaty soil. It is not particularly fond of sitting in wet soils and can struggle in these situations and as such we would recommend that heavy wet soils are avoided. The English Yew can be found growing wild on chalk soils.
English Yew (Taxus baccata hedge) readybag hedging can be kept as a low hedge of around 40-50cm tall but can also make a hedge that is in excess of 250cm, but all heights with regular trimming it will form a dense hedge. If left untrimmed it will flower and then produce a red fruit in the Autumn but with regular trimming these will be almost non-existent.
The Royal Horticultural Society awarded English Yew an Award of Garden Merit in 1984.
