Pittosporum tenuifolium Readybag Hedging
Pittosporum tenuifolium Readybag Hedging is a lovely soft green evergreen hedge. The leaves are small and have a slightly wavey edge to them and are held on black stems which sets them off perfectly. Pittosporum tenuifolium is predominantly grown for its foliage and it is much prized by florists for this, it does however have a slightly inconspicuous fragrant chocolate-purple coloured flower that is held close to the stems. The flowers have a slight honey scent to them which is normally strongest in the evening.
Pittosporum tenuifolium Readybag hedging is suitable for growing in most soils except really wet soils but prefers a light loamy soil. It is very tolerant of dry soils and of growing in shaded areas. Pittosporum is frost hardy in most locations and is excellent planted in coastal locations aa well as in urban areas. In sheltered situations it can make a plant nearly 3 metres in height but in most situations 2 metres is more achievable and realistic.
Pittosporum tenuifolium is a native of New Zealand where it is found on both North and South islands and at almost 3000 feet above sea level. The Royal Horticultural Society gave it an Award of Merit in 1931 and an Award of Garden Merit in 1984.
