Shrubby Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida hedge)
Shrubby Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida) Readybag Hedging is a dense small leaved evergreen shrub. Often thought of as a replacement for Common box (Buxus sempervirens) due to its disease resistance it is a fast growing plant that can be kept down to a minimum of 60cm in height with regular trimming. It can also be kept as a hedge of around 150cm in height but if keeping it at this hight it will need trimming with a taper to allow light down to the lower branches and more regular trimming to stop it becoming top heavy. We would recommend that whatever height you have your shrubby Honeysuckle hedge at that it is all cut with a slight taper to it to make the most of the plant.
Shrubby Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida hedge) Readybag hedging prefers a loamy well drained soil but with good soil preparation can grow nearly anywhere as long as it is not waterlogged. Unlike the climbing honeysuckles the shrubby Honeysuckle hedge does not have showy highly fragrant flower but more discreet and fragrance-free flower, which is followed by small black berries, but these will be nearly non-existent with regular trimming.
Shrubby Honeysuckle hedge was introduced by Ernest Wilson from Western China in 1908
