Escallonia ‘Crimson Spire’ evergreen instant hedge, has leathery, dark green glossy leaves with a slightly serrated edge to them. These leaves help to set off the beautiful five peteled crimson pink flowers spectacularly. Traditionally grown as a seaside hedge, it can be grown in nearly all parts of Great Britain if given some protection especially in colder Northern regions. It will also grow well in urban areas where it is normally a little bit warmer. With regular trimming Escallonia ‘Crimson Spire’ evergreen instant hedge can be kept at around 80cm in height but with a lot of trimming you will get a few less flowers. It is best trimmed after flowering as it will be a good source of nectar for flying insects like bees. If left untrimmed this plant can reach around 2 metres in height but will become very woody and bare towards the base. It is best trimmed with a taper so the bottom is slightly wider than the top to ensure good leaf cover all over the plant especially towards the base.
This hedge gets great comments from anyone who sees it on the nursery and it is very popular within the Hedgeplants.com sales team for being such a good and reliable hedge.
Escallonia ‘Crimson Spire’ has been given an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1984
