Installing a hedge

  • Hedging should be watered well on receipt of delivery if it is being stored prior to planting
  • For hedging supplied in troughs, dig a trench measuring roughly 25x30cm (10 x 12 inches). For hedging in bags, 40x40cm (16 x 16 inches)
  • Remove plants from troughs or bags
  • Lay the hedging into the trench metre by metre, adjusting the positioning until you are happy with the way it lines up
  • Backfill with soil and compact the soil firmly
  • Fertilise and water-in well
  • Trim hedge tops until they are level, to allow for any uneven planting
  • Hedges should be fed with a general-purpose granular fertiliser at the rate of one handful per linear metre annually. Be careful to keep fertiliser off plant foliage and always wear gloves. For more details, refer to the feeding notes in the product range section of this site
  • It is essential to ensure that the soil is kept moist after planting until the hedge has rooted in. In dry conditions regular watering will be needed
  • We suggest that for longer lengths of hedge, a ‘leaky pipe’ watering system should be considered
